CORDOVA – The City of Cordova and Sen. Richard Shelby announced on Tuesday that the city will receive a $5.17 million dollar grant to repair and repave Cordova’s 30 miles of roadway.
Shelby first announced the news in a statement released on Tuesday.
“I am proud to announce that Alabama is receiving more than $27 million for local infrastructure improvement projects through DOT’s RAISE Grant Program,” he said. “All three of these investments will support improved quality of life, safety, and experience in each of their respective communities.”
Renee Sides, chairwoman of the Cordova Economic Industrial Development Authority (CEIDA), informed the city council about the Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) grant during Tuesday’s meeting.
“There were three cities that recieved the funding,” Sides said. “There was $27 million that was awarded with $20 million dollars going straight to Huntsville. We got the second most amount.”
“It’s something to be proud of,” Cordova mayor Jeremy Pate said about the city being selected.
Sides said that the funding should be enough to pave “nearly every road in Cordova.”
The city doesn’t expect to see the first part of the funding until October, but Sides said the work will start soon to get ready for the project.
“One of the things we’ll be starting – probably next week – is getting a team together to start identifying roads that need to be paved first,” she said, adding that the city is expecting the paving process to take three years to complete.
