County, city retired workers getting bonuses

Retired workers from Jasper and Walker County will receive one-time bonuses after being approved last week by city and county officials.

The Walker County Commission approved the one-time longevity bonus, which will cost the county $76,280.

The Jasper City Council approved the same bonus for its retirees with it to cost the city approximately $75,000.

The Alabama Legislature approved bonuses for retired teachers and state employees back in March. Local governments also had the option to provide the bonus to their retired employees. The deadline for local action is Aug. 31.

The payments will go from the local governments to the Retirement Systems of Alabama for distribution. The bonuses are expected to be distributed in October.

Jeff Sparks, chapter president of the Alabama Retired State Employees Association for District 15, thanked Jasper officials for the bonus approval during last week’s city council meeting.

“It is very much needed, and it is very much appreciated,” Sparks said.
