The Curry Yellow Jackets felt the sweetness of victory for the first time since October 2018, snapping a 35-game losing streak with a 42-21 win over Berry Friday night.
Curry Coach D.J. Emerson said the win is a proud moment for him, the coaches, the players, the school and the community.
“It’s indescribable,” D.J. Emerson said “It is these kids. They’ve worked so hard for this and didn’t see the results. They worked so hard and it wouldn’t happen but they kept fighting. Just like tonight, it was a back and forth game and could have went either way, but they just kept fight, and all that work paid off with a win.”
The game shifted around 6 minutes left in the fourth quarter. The Yellow Jackets (1-1) led 28-21 but Berry (0-1) was in the red zone. Curry’s Ian Tuggle picked off a Berry pass and returned it 90 yards for a score to help seal the game for the Yellow Jackets.
“Game changer. That’s all you can call it,” Emerson said. “One of our words we talk about is ‘finish,’ well, he finished that play.”
Josh Day threw four touchdown passes for Curry, connecting with Jace Calloway three times and Collin Page once. Kody Cooke added a touchdown run.
Curry will travel next week to face a winless Dora team in a Class 4A, Region 5 matchup.
“We are going to try to get another one, but we are going to enjoy this one tonight,” Emerson said.
