Eagles hang on to win season opener

Sumiton Christian 14 | Hubbertville 8

HUBBERTVILLE – Sumiton Christian opened its 2022 season Friday night with a 14-8 road victory over Hubbertville.

The game was a battle between Class 1A, Region 5 teams.

The two teams played to a scoreless tie until just over eight minutes left in the second quarter when Sumiton Christian’s Jake White scored on a 1-yard run yo give the Eagles a 6-0 lead.

Hubbertville took the lead 8-6 with 4:19 left in the second quarter. Jagger Youngblood scored on a 2-yard run. The 2-point try was good on a passing score.

The Eagles grabbed the lead back 14-8 with 1:28 left in the first half. Kinnen DeFoor scored on a 52-yard run. White connected with DeFoor on the 2-point conversion.

Neither team could find the end zone in the second half. The Eagles stopped the Lions on fourth and goal from the 3 late in the third quarter. SCS also intercepted a Hubbertville pass with 59 seconds left in the game to preserve the win.

The Eagles (1-0, 1-0) will host Pickens County (1-1, 1-0) next week.
