JASPER – City of Jasper Animal Care & Control has reopened their canine adoptions after experiencing a temporary ban due to an outbreak of H3N2, or canine influenza (CIV).
The announcement came via Facebook on Saturday.
“All of our animals have a clean bill of health and are ready for their FURever home!” the post read.
The ban on adoptions came back in July when Lindy Alverson, DVM of The Greater Birmingham Humane Society (GBHS), put shelters in the GBHS system under a Priority-1 status due to a number of dogs testing positive for CIV.
“We did a controlled test for the canine influenza on a handful of dogs,” says Lindsey Cross, manager at Jasper Animal & Care. “The tests came back as being negative for CIV in our shelter”.
The negative tests allowed the Jasper shelter to cancel it’s Priority-1 status and once again allow dogs to be both accepted and adopted through the system.
“We are definitely excited,” Cross said when asked how the employees of JCAS were feeling in regards to canine adoptions being reinstated.
