Sweet treats with Mexican flair

Erick De Rueda Barba has dreamed of owning his own business for most of his life. He always felt it would be a restaurant, but that idea changed and Mi Michoacana, a place for sweet treats recently became a reality.

Before opening the ice cream shop, De Rueda Barba worked as manager at Cabos San Lucas for the last 11 years. He said his family background in business and that position is what has taught him customer service skills.

“After so many years of managing, I realized I needed to dedicate more time to my family. I realized I needed to spend more time with them and create a family-owned business,” he said. “After many years of thinking about continuing to work in the food industry and dreaming about someday owning my own restaurant, everything unexpectantly changed for me.

“It wasn’t making me happy anymore. This is when I fell into burn out mode,” he added. “I remembered what makes us happy. A smile of who serves you makes you happy and create a wonderful memory of having an ice cream.”

De Rueda Barba said all his ice cream and popsicles are made with fresh fruit.

“Every flavor is the true flavor of each fruit which it was made of. This makes you really enjoy every flavor that is created and products I offer,” he said.

Ice cream, popsicles and other sweets are not the only items on the menu. De Rueda Barba said he has also added a mixture of Mexican street traditional food.

“My place of origin is Mexico. Our customs and traditions are well known for our people to eat everything spicy. This is how we started adding a touch of spice. In this same way we also added a mixture of street traditional food from our childhood,” he said.. “Therefore, we have street Mexican corn, chicharrón, which is very crunchy and contains pickled pork skin with vegetables such as: cabbage, tomato, cilantro and queso Ranchero with a little mayonnaise.

“We also have ice cream with chamoy that makes a sweet/sour explosion. This gives you so much excitement to eat ice cream with chile,” he added.

De Rueda Barba said the goal is to offer small desserts with a touch of fun and excitement.

“At the end it can be enjoyed with the company of friends and family. All of these combinations will create a beautiful memory,” he said.

Mi Michoacana is located at 145 Highway 78 West in Jasper, across from Autozone and Bedz Express.
