Will it work?

Week 3 update at The Community Journal

I started building The Community Journal’s website in June of this year. For a month and a half, I stared at the social media counter at the top of the page with all zeroes, not knowing if the feature would even work correctly.

Now I look at it and see over 700 Facebook “fans.” It’s one of those things that has truly been emotional for me to say the least.

I’ve attended several events over the last week shooting photos for The Journal. At each one, I’ve personally spoken to so many people that have expressed their support for what we are doing here. As the “guy that prefers to stay behind the camera,” it’s been an adjustment to learn to be one the faces of the company, but all of your love and support has made that adjustment so much easier.

This past week has been even more fun that the previous as we continue to grow faster than even we could have imagined. Here’s your Community Journal update:

• As you read this, we will be preparing to film the debut episode of “Inside The Vikes.” The show will debut on Thursday on YouTube. Be among the first to see the new show by subscribing to the channel and turning on notifications.

• We are still looking for local contributors that would be interested in writing feature stories and covering sports and community events. If you or someone you know would be interested, please contact us at [email protected]

• This week we announced that The Community Journal will provide obituary listings for free. This is part of a larger initiative that will be announced in the coming weeks to offer more community services as we continue to grow within the Walker County area. The listing can be as long as you like and, of course, can include a picture. Our policy is that the obit must come from the funeral home directly and not from an individual.

• All four of our primary writers, James Phillips, Rachel Davis, Margaret Winborne and myself, are continuing to make new contacts within the community and are working tirelessly to bring you more exclusive, community-based content in addition to world-class local news coverage. We all have a busy week ahead of us. The contributors that have written for us so far have done a great job and I hope to see more great things from them in the future.

• James and myself will be at TV25 in Jasper today. Be sure to tune in as we will be guests on ‘Coffee Time’ to talk about The Community Journal.

• Lastly, we will be working this week to meet with business owners around Walker County to discuss how The Journal can be the perfect fit for you to get your brand to thousands in Walker County. Modern times call for modern marketing solutions. If you would like more information about advertising with The Community Journal, please feel free to reach out to James.

That’s going to be it for this week as far as what’s going on behind the scenes.

Although I was told not to share this, seeing how fast we’re growing, there may or may not be plans to do a giveaway when we get to 1,000 Facebook likes. Just, for my sake, don’t tell James I told you that.

See you next week.
