Cordova passes FY22/23 budget

CORDOVA – The Cordova City Council on Tuesday night approved its fiscal year 2022/23 budget.

The budget shows revenue expected at $1.485 million for the year. Mayor Jeremy Pate said that was about $50,000 more than the previous year. The largest part of the projected revenue is sales tax at $424,000.

“Things have held steady, so the budget is pretty similar to last year,” Pate said.

While the budget was unanimously approved, the council decided to table the city’s annual audit, which was for fiscal year 2020/21. Council members said they needed more time to review the document.

“I’m sorry I couldn’t get it to you sooner, but we just got it yesterday,” Pate said.

The council is expected to approve the audit at its next meeting on Oct. 11.

In other action from the meeting, the council:

  • Held a public hearing for nuisance properties at 423 Buttercup Road and 811 Amory Avenue.
  • Approved a new fee schedule. The sewer tap fee was raised from $400 to $500. If the tap requires road boring or cutting of the road more than 40 feet, the owner pays the city for the pipe. A brush service fee was changed. The first load per year will remain free, but the second load fee will increase from $25 to $40.
  • Approved a new service and credit application for sewer and garbage.
  • Amended the business license issuance fee, which will go from $10 to $14 per business license.
  • Approved ARPA funds for the renovation of the community center. The funds will resurface and stain the concrete floors in the building.
  • Awarded a bid for the community center work to Hartselle-based Deco Crete. The bid was for just over $13,000, which was half what the only other bidder offered.
  • Authorized ARPA funds for holiday decorations.
