County teams head into high stakes region games

Three Walker County teams are playing region games against familiar opponents tonight as we get into the meat of the 2022 high school football season.

Oakman and Carbon Hill meet for the 54th time in Class 3A, Region 5 play while Dora renews their annual rivalry game against Corner in the County Line Clash.

After starting the season 0-2, the Bulldogs (2-2, 2-0) have bounced back by winning their frist two region games against Curry and Haleyville. They look to carry that momentum forward tonight on the road against undefeated Corner.

The Yellow Jackets (3-0, 2-0) survived on the road against Cordova a week ago, winning 27-26 in overtime. Corner’s Gavin Brown rushed for nearly 200 yards and three touchdowns plus a touchdown a pass. The Jackets will need much of the same from the senior running back to bounce back from last year’s 42-14 loss at Dora.

Dora leads the series 32-12-2 all-time, but Corner has won five of the last seven meetings between the Walker and Jefferson County schools.

At the other end of Walker County, Mark Conchran’s Carbon Hill Bulldogs are looking for their first win of the 2022 season against a young, but improving, Oakman team.

Carbon Hill (0-3, 0-1) lost their first three games of the season 123-38, including a 59-8 loss against Fayette County a week ago. The Wildcats, meanwhile, have bounced back from giving up 30+ points per game in back-to-back losses to Sulligent and Cordova to start the year. Oakman’s defense has given up just 20 points in region play this year, going 2-0 as the Wildcats look to build toward another Playoff year.

Oakman (2-2, 2-0) has won the last eight meetings between the two teams since 1996 while Carbon Hill leads the series 27-21-6 all-time.

Also in action:

Cordova, coming off a career performance by quarterback Cody Headrick in their loss to Corner, wil travel to Hamilton. Three of the Blue Devils losses this season have come by a combined nine points. The Aggies, however, are winless on the season.

After taking down Hubbertville 14-8 in week one, Sumiton Christian is reeling from getting outscored 75-7 in back-to-back losses to Pickens County and Lynn. The Eagles return home Friday night to take on a Brilliant team that has only scored eight points through three games.

Jasper is retuning to Ki-Ro Gambrell Field after three straight road games. The Vikings looks to carry over momentum from their first win of the season against Wenonah, a team that lost to Carver Birmingham, 35-34, last week.
