DORA – The Dora Bulldogs opened Class 4A, Region 5 play Friday night as they hosted the Curry Yellow Jackets at Horace Robert’s Field.
Dora used a strong running game and rode a defensive effort that cause five Curry turnovers and coasted to a 47-8 victory.
“I’m very proud of our response tonight, especially our second half effort” said Bulldogs head coach Chavis Williams.
Quarterback Sean Pryor connected on the first of two touchdown passes to Garrett Hogland for a 7 yard score at the 8:16 mark. Dillon Watson added the PAT for a 7-0 Bulldogs lead.
Curry (1-2 0-1) saw their first two possessions end in interceptions by Dora’s Jayden Griffin. The Jackets took over at the 40 yard line on the third possession and put together a 10 play drive for their only points of the night. Kody Cook capped the drive with a 3 yard run. Josh Day ran in the two point conversion to stake Curry to an 8-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Dora (1-2 1-0) regained the lead at the 10:40 mark of the second quarter when Ty Clayton scored his first touchdown on a 13 yard scamper, pushing the Bulldogs lead to 13-8.
Dora struck again with 5:00 left in the half. Hogland, found pay dirt on a 3 yard quarterback keeper. Jamarcus Goodmon added a two point run as the teams headed to the locker room with Dora leading 21-8.
The second half was all Dora as eight Bulldogs carried the ball for 245 rushing yards on the night, led by Goodmon with 97 yards on 10 carries. The Bulldogs defense led by by Cam Gosha held Curry to 45 second half yards.
Dora started the second half at the Yellow Jackets 18 yard line. Goodmon ran 3 yard for a touchdown on second down. Watson kicked it to a 28-8 advantage. The Pryor to Hogland connection clicked again on the next set of downs. This time on a 19 yard strike and a 35-8 lead with the Watson extra point. Clayton tallied his second score of the game on a 2 yard run to push the Bulldogs lead to 41-8 headed to the final frame. Reserve quarterback Bartley Black closed out the Dora scoring, as he took a fumbled snap an outraced the defense around right end for 14 yards to the house to give the Bulldogs their first win of the season 47-8.
Pryor finished his night 5 of 9 passing for 92 yards and two touchdowns. Ty Clayton added 47 yards and two scores. The Yelliw Jackets were led by quarterback Day with 136 passing yards.
“ Our younger players are working hard and we are getting better every day” added Coach Williams following the victory.
Dora will travel to Haleyville next week. Curry will play host to Northside.
