George Bonner, of Fayette, Alabama (formerly of Jasper & Carbon Hill) passed away and his soul took wing in the early hours of Sunday, September 25, 2022, after having sailed victoriously around the sun 76 times.
He leaves behind his wife, Cindy “Bubbles”; son Allen Bonner; daughter Donna Bonner Stringer (Joel); grandchildren Blake Bonner, Ben Bonner, Cole Bonner (Chaney), and Hannah Bonner Earnest (Cameron); great-granddaughter Willow Earnest; sisters Glenda Hannah Bonner and Cindy Bonner Clements (Donald), as well as numerous other family, friends, and loved ones.
Born January 7, 1946, George was the son of the late Wilburn Buford Bonner and Tean Johnson Bonner. He spent his early years in Carbon Hill, graduating in 1964, after which he signed on with Alabama Power Company. This began a career that spanned 43 years. Finally retiring in 2008, George settled down in Fayette to enjoy life on the farm with Bubbles and THE HERD.
George was larger than life and what a life it was- full of family, friends, music, laughter, and good times! He was “The Captain” and he loved that nickname, always signing off on his weekly Facebook posts with “CAP’T OUT!”
He was a family man. He adored his tight-knit Bonner Clan: his “bodacious” Bubbles, his kids Allen and “Donza Belle”, and, maybe most of all, his grandkids- until came the “new blood”, the birth of “the effervescent Willy”. Pawpaw George was thoroughly smitten with his great granddaughter. George’s love of travel led to many family cruises, which fit nicely with his love of the Florida Keys, all things Jimmy Buffet, and the occasional ice-cold El Sol.
George loved his cats, who he lovingly dubbed “THE HERD” (All caps-it’s in their contract). He loved sports, especially football. He was a staunch fan of the Alabama Crimson Tide (faithful in the good times and bad) and his fantasy football league (though it’s been said that no one wanted to trade players with him). His competitive spirit led him to coach youth sports- football, basketball, and baseball- for many years. His passion for the game touched so many in the Jasper area.
He also was an avid reader, writer, and music enthusiast. Although Parrothead he most definitely was, George’s love of music was vast and he was continually sharing the music that he loved with those he loved.
George also loved his co-workers- his other family- too, a crew with which he shared work time and free time as they journeyed throughout Alabama and the southeast together. Every year, he would cook for them what he proudly labeled his “Famous Red Beans and Rice” and once retired, he and his crew still met up for lunch regularly.
George was, very simply put, a man who loved life and lived it to the fullest, as Joe Walsh might say, Life’s Been Good- his was the epitome of a life well-lived, and, now, he’s gone home. Sail home, Cap’t!
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Fayette County Animal Shelter.
