Jasper, Cordova, SCS, Carbon Hill lose in region openers

BIRMINGHAM – Jasper struggled at Legion Field Friday night, dropping its first region game 54-6 to No.6-ranked Ramsay. 

Ramsay scored five touchdowns in the first quarter, with two of those being fumble returns for scores. The Rams led 34-0 at the end of the first. 

Ramsay scored on a punt return early in the second quarter before rushing for another score to take a 47-0 lead at halftime. 

The Rams added a touchdown in the third quarter to lead 54-0. 

Jasper scored in the fourth quarter when quarterback Bubba Odom, who took over at quarterback in the first quarter for an injured Tanner Morrow, connected with Titus Waldrop on a 28-yard pass with 9:02 left in the game. Odom finished the game 11-of-21 for 110 yards with that score. 

Jasper falls to  0-3 for the first time since 2003. The Vikings will travel for the third straight week when they take on Fairfield in a region game next week. 

Haleyville 45, Cordova 41

HALEYVILLE – A fourth quarter comeback by Haleyville cost Cordova a win Friday night, falling 45-41 in the region contest. 

Cordova led 14-10 at halftime before a big third quarter saw the Blue Devils take a 34-25 lead heading into the fourth. Cordova scored once in the fourth to lead 41-25. 

After three consecutive scores from Haleyville, Córdoba’s attempt at a comeback fell short with an interception deep in Haleyville territory. 

David Odom led Cordova, carrying the ball 23 times for 238 yards and three touchdowns.

The Blue Devils drop to 1-2 on the season and 0-1 in region play. Cordova will host region for Corner (2-0, 1-0) next week. 

No. 8 Pickens County 38, Sumiton Christian 7

SUMITON -A ranked Pickens County squad handed Sumiton Christian its first loss of the season 38-7 Friday night. 

Pickens County led 8-0 after the first quarter but increased that lead to 24-0 at halftime. 

The Tornadoes added a safety and a touchdown to lead 32-0 midway through the third quarter. 

The Eagles scored with 2:17 left in the third quarter on a 48-yard touchdown run by Noah Godwin to cut the lead to 32-7.

Pickens County scored late in the fourth quarter to go up 38-7. 

Sumiton Christian will look for it’s first region win next week when the Eagles travel to Lynn. 

Winston County 38, Carbon Hill 14

CARBON HILL — In a Class 3A, Region 5 matchup, Carbon Hill fell 38-14 to Winston County on Friday night. 

Winston County led 8-0 after the first quarter. 

Carbon Hill tied the score at 8-8 in the second quarter on a Brady Ingle 1-yard touchdown run. Devon Daniel scored the 2-point conversion. 

Winston County scored two times in the second quarter to take a 22-8 lead at halftime. 

The Yellow Jackets scored twice in the third quarter to take a 36-8 lead. 

Carbon Hill scored with 2:46 left in the game on a Daniel 55-yard run to cut the lead 36-14. 

The Bulldogs will travel to Fayette County for a region game next week.
