Nauvoo man charged in Dollar General vehicle theft

The Walker County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday received a phone call concerning a vehicle that had been stolen from Dollar General on Highway 5 near Prospect Road.

Deputies and Investigators arrived on scene to learn that a 2001 Suzuki Grand Vitara was taken from Dollar General while the owners were inside the store.  Investigator Nicholas Moseley, with the help of our Facebook followers, was able to quickly develop leads related to the offenders.

Tuesday afternoon, Investigators Moseley, Brad Curtis and “Smooch” Bridges were in the Dogtown community when they happened to spot the stolen vehicle traveling down the road right in front of them.

The lawmen activated their emergency lights in an attempt to conduct a traffic stop. The driver of the stolen vehicle, however, attempted to elude law enforcement.  He struck mailboxes and road signs before eventually stopping due to a flat tire causing the vehicle to leave the roadway.

Carlton Lee Bryan, 35, of Nauvoo, jumped out of the vehicle and tried to flee on foot. He was quickly caught by Bridges and immediately placed in handcuffs. Bryan then alerted investigators that he had a small bag of heroin in his mouth and spat it out.

Bryan was taken to the Walker County Jail without further incident.

Investigators interviewed Bryan Wednesday, and he confessed the location of items that were taken from the stolen vehicle. Investigators were able to recover much of the property and return it to the rightful owner.

Bryan is being charged with First Degree Theft of Property, Resisting Arrest, Attempting to Elude, Reckless Endangerment, Criminal Mischief, and Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance.
