Vikings slay Dragons 45-7

Jasper cruised to a win Friday night with a 45-7 victory over Wenonah at Ki-Ro Gambrell Field.

The Vikings improve to 2-3 on the season and 2-1 in Class 5A, Region 5.

“I am proud of the kids. There is lots of work left to be done, and we have to continue to get better, but that’s about as well as we’ve played so far this year in all 3 phases,” Jasper coach Philip Bailey said. “I am extremely pleased with the performance our defense turned in. There’s a lot still out there for this team.”

The Jasper defense forced six turnovers on the night, five fumbles and one interception. The Dragons were held to just over 100 yards of total offense.

Quarterback Spencer Rosenfeld opened the scoring for the Vikings with a short touchdown run on their first possession. Jasper led 7-0 after the first quarter.

Micah Pledger scored on a 2-yard run to give Jasper a 14-0 lead early in the second quarter.

Jasper’s Trey Reese forced a fumble, which Bubba Odom picked up and returned 17 yards for a score to put the Vikings up 21-0.

Garrett Busby scored on a 5-yard run with 3:18 left in the second quarter to push the Jasper lead to 28-0.

Wenonah scored with 37 seconds left in the first half, but Jasper answered when Rosenfeld connected with Odom on a 72-yes scoring strike to give Jasper a 35-7 lead at halftime.

Pedro Ponce connected on a 39-yard with 9:43 left in the third quarter to increase the Vikings’ lead to 38-7.

Pledger scored his second touchdown of the night with 6:23 left in the game, giving Jasper the 45-7 win.

Jasper will have a bye next week. The Vikings return to action on Sept. 30 when they host Hayden in a region game.
