Several area agencies were awarded appropriations this week by the Walker County Commission.
The total funds in appropriations given was $145,000. County administrator Robbie Dickerson said the funding for fiscal year 2023 appropriations remained the same as last year. The largest amount was $100,000, which was awarded to the Walker County Economic Development Authority. Those funds are divided with $75,000 coming from the county’s General Fund and $25,000 from lodging tax.
Other offices receiving funds from the lodging tax are the Chamber of Commerce of Walker County ($20,000) and the East Walker Chamber of Commerce ($5,000).
Other organizations receiving funds from the a general Fund include the ARC of Walker County ($5,000), the Walker County Extension Office ($5,000), the Middle Alabama Area Agency on Aging ($5,000), the Walker County Community Action Agency ($5,000) and the Walker County Transportation Program ($5,000).
“I’m glad we are able to do this, since there have been some years we did not have enough funds,” Dickerson said.
Dickerson added that all appropriations have been paid for the new fiscal year.
District 2 Commissioner Jeff Burrough said he was glad the county can give appropriations.
“I appreciate the work of all the people who the appropriations were given to,” he said.
In other action from Monday’s meeting, the commission approved the 2022 holiday work schedule for county employees.
The commission meeting scheduled for Nov. 21 is cancelled. Days observed for Thanksgiving will be Thursday, Nov. 24 and Friday, Nov. 25.
The commission meeting scheduled for Dec. 19 is cancelled. Days observed for Christmas will be Friday, Dec. 23 and Monday, Dec. 26.
The commission meeting scheduled for Jan. 2 is cancelled, and that will be the off day for New Year’s.
The county will follow the state holiday schedule for the remainder of 2023.
Commissioners also approved the hiring of two employees during Monday’s meeting. Barbara Higgins and Tammy Elliot were hired as part-time administrative assistants in the commission office.
