Jasper council votes to change city garbage rates

JASPER – The City of Jasper’s garbage rates will be changing effective January 1, 2023.

City clerk and planner Kathy Chambless presented the ordinance to the council at Tuesday’s meeting after changes had been discussed in previous work sessions.

“We’ve been looking at this for quite some time,” she told the council during the meeting. “We’ve discused it in several work sessions and the council has asked that we provide some survey information regarding rates that different cities charge.”

As of the first of 2023, Jasper’s residential garbage rates will be raised from $14 per month to $16, billed quarterly. The late penalty imposed to to residents will also be raised from $5 to $10. It is the first time the penalty has been raised since the 2001 ordinance that set a garbage fee for the City of Jasper.

Small businesses that use only the standard 98 gallon can will see a rate increase $30 to $40 while dumpster pickup, which is currently set at $25, will increase to $30 for weekly pickup.

One area that will see a decrease is the deposit fee for businesses that require a dumpster. The fee is currently set at $500.

“We’d like to reduce that down to $250 to try and provide those small businesses with a break as they try to open businesses,” Chambless said.

The council unanimously voted to approve the ordinance following Chambless’ presentation.

Residents will see a note on their upcoming bill notifying them of the rate increases.
