PARRISH – Members of the Parrish Town Council voted Tuesday to contract with an organization to obtain grants for the town.
The cost for the service, provided by Montgomery-based Azimuth Simple Grants, is $145 per hour with Parrish paying for 300 hours for a total of $43,500.
The hours can be used toward grant research, grant writing and grant management.
“I believe partnering with Azimuth Simple Grants can be huge for our town,” Mayor Bubba Cagle said on Wednesday. “We will never make significant strides without seeking out various grant funding. We are investing in the town. I am exstatic about the possibilities for Parrish ahead of us.”
Cagle announced bids were opened on Wednesday, Oct. 5 for a road project funded by a Community Development Block Grant. The only bid turned in was from Tuscaloosa-based Central Alabama Asphalt and Construction for $308,690, which was over the $250,000 in grant funding obtained by the town. Cleaning and reshaping a current ditch was removed from the project and shoulder repair was reduced to save $87,500. Paving a section of Old Baltimore Road and 50 tons of riprap were added at a cost of $23,150 to bring the bid after the deductions to $244,340.
The project will include parts of Shady Grove Road, Edison-Atkins Road and Old Baltimore Road.
“It has been a long process with the CDBG road improvement grant but we are excited to see the work begin,” Cagle said.
The council approved raising non-seasonal employees, who are paid less than $10 per hour, to $10 per hour as well as raising the base starting rate of pay for non-seasonal employees to a $10.00 per hour minimum.
Council members also voted to enter into a contract with the Jasper Area Family Services (Head Start unit) that would see JAFS pay 50 percent of the utilities at the old Parrish High School.
