River race, Indian Head Harvest Fest taking place Saturday

The Sipsey Heritage Commission is sponsoring The Great Escape: River Run from Crockett race on Saturday, running 14 miles from the Sipsey Fork in Sipsey to Disney Landing in Cordova.

The race is being held in conjunction with the Indian Head Harvest Fest in Cordova.

The starting time for the race is at 8 a.m. Martha Solomaa, president of the Sipsey Heritage Commission, said kayaks, paddle boards and canoes will all be involved in the event.

The race will commemorate the 1813 escape of the Black Warrior Town of Creek Native Americans from Davy Crockett and the Tennessee Militia. Solomaa has written a piece on the history, which is posted at community-journal.com

“This is different from the races we’ve held in the past. Those started on (Highway) 69 and ended at The Forks,” Solomaa said.

Solomaa said she expects a large turnout of participants for the new race, saying they typically have between 75 and 100 racers.

The third annual Indian Head Harvest Fest will kickoff in Cordova at 10 a.m. about the time many of the racers finish the water race.

Indian Head Harvest Fest is sponsored by the Cordova Economic and Industrial Development Authority. It will continue throughout Saturday.

Contests include a bake-off and a chili cook-off. There will also be pie eating and hot dog eating contest.

There will be a lost arts tent for viewing throughout the day, and musical acts will perform starting at noon with the last act taking the stage at 4.
