The annual Walker County Christmas Parade, sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce of Walker County, will be held Tuesday, Dec. 6, at 6:30 p.m.
The deadline to enter the parade is Friday, Dec. 2. There is no fee to enter. Entries must be signed up through the chamber. For more information, call the chamber at 205-384-4571 or email Lewis at [email protected].
Linda Lewis, president of the chamber, said Monday,
“We have a large number of entries this year. I expect it will be as large or larger than any other year,” said Linda Lewis, president of the Chamber.
Lewis said she expects the parade to last up to an hour and a half due to the number of entrants.
The parade will start lining up at 4 p.m. at T.R. Simmons Elementary School and the old Walker High parking lot.
Santa Claus will be greeting children, passing out candy and books at the Jasper Civic Center at 3:30 p.m., Lewis said. She added that no imitation live Santas are allowed on floats in the parade.
“Santa is always our guest of honor,” Lewis said.
Awards will be given for first-, second- and third-place, as well as honorable mention, for the following categories: Business, Children, Non-Profit, Government and Anique Cars. “Floats will be judged on creativity, originality and theme,” according to the guidelines.
The parade route will go down 19th Street, turn right onto Sixth Avenue, and then right again on 18th Street to go back to the old Walker parking lot.
The Community Journal will have live video from the parade as well as a full gallery of photos. TCJ coverage of the Walker County parade and other Christmas events is sponsored by Senate President Pro Tem Greg Reed.
