The Walker County Sheriff’s Office has announced that the GED Program has been resumed in the Walker County Jail.
The GED Program started just after Sheriff Nick Smith took office but was suspended during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We have said many times before, incarceration definitely has a punitive side; however, that’s not the only thing incarceration is for,” Smith said. “If incarcerated individuals can learn something new, develop new skills or perhaps develop a new mindset, then the chances of them returning are much less.”
Investigator Carl Carpenter, who will be the instructor, on Thursday interviewed potential candidates for the program, which should start in the next few days.
