My 15-year-old daughter Daisy loves Christmas music. She could listen to it year-round. I cannot.
I don’t mind Christmas music, as long as it’s played from Thanksgiving and Christmas. Honestly, I really like.
One problem I have is I get tired of the same old songs over that month. But digital music platforms have solved that problem for me. I’ve found some songs or versions of songs that I’ve never heard.
Here are a few:
“Thank God It’s Christmas” by Queen: Freddie Mercury could sing an instructional manual on how to put together a bookcase, and it would sound great, but the lyrics of the song really resonated with me considering the last year.
“Mistress for Christmas” by AC/DC: This definitely isn’t a spiritual Christmas carol, but it’s got a cool sound that lets you know immediately who the band is. The lyrics are a lot of just repeating the title.
“River” by Joni Mitchell: My wife introduced me to this song this year. I thought she was talking about that sexy sounding song from the TikTok videos, but I was way off base. I found it quite depressing.
“Unwrap You for Christmas” by The Monkees: I used to love The Monkees television show when Nick at Nite started showing them. I was a little shocked by the content of the song.
“Merry Christmas From the Family” by Robert Earl Keen: Rick Watson introduced me to this song. He would sing it every Christmas. Envision “Christmas Vacation” in a song, and then make it a little more redneck. I love it.
“Santa Claus Go Straight to the Ghetto” by James Brown: “The Godfather of Soul” is so smooth all the time. The vibe of this song is very good.
“Silent Night” by Jimi Hendrix: I don’t think anything else needs to be said.
“All I Want for Christmas is You” by Foghat: It’s not amazing, but it’s sure less annoying than that Mariah Carey tune with the same name.
