The Community Journal targeted by malware attack

Some readers have reported spam redirects when visiting community-journal.com over the past several days, causing issues with both the website and the ability to share links across social media platforms.

“Unfortunately, when you’re a startup company, some of the more affordable hosting and security plans aren’t the best,” said James Phillips, co-founder and owner of The Community Journal. “Our IT team has worked endlessly trying to solve this problem over the past 48 hours.”

A deep scan of the website, which is hosted by GoDaddy.com, showed two infected files. The two files were purged from the system. Better security has already been added.

“We are optimistic that this process has fixed the problems that users have been experiencing,” Phillips said.

Phillips said that it is important to make sure to carry forth the motto of total transparency when it comes to the Journal.

“When Jeffery (Winborne) and I founded this thing, we promised our readers we would be totally transparent with everything going on with us,” he said. “That’s why it is so important that I carry that forward and let everyone know what has been going on with the website.”

Stories from the last few days will be reposted over the next few hours, Phillips said Saturday afternoon. As always, TCJ posts are always free to read.

If users continue to notice any similar issues, they are encouraged to report them by commenting on Facebook posts or emailing The Community Journal directly at [email protected].
