While most Walker County students will resume classes on Thursday, students in Carbon Hill will not return to school until Friday to allow another day for the facility to rebound from flooding issues caused by burst pipes that happened during the holiday break.
“The faculty and staff need an extra day to appropriately prepare their rooms for students. Therefore, students will return to school on Friday,” Walker County Schools Superintendent Dennis Willingham said Tuesday afternoon. “This is only for Carbon Hill Schools. All other Walker County students will return to school on Thursday as scheduled.”
Carbon Hill Elementary and Carbon Hill High schools, housed in the same building, suffered water damage when sprinkler system pipes burst, flooding the office areas, several classrooms and some hallways in the facility.
Willingham said the WCS maintenance crew and administrators from both schools have worked tirelessly to get the building ready for classes to resume.
“I appreciate all the hard work that has taken place to get the schools ready,” Willingham added.
