Walker County turns 200 in December of this year.
The Community Journal posted that fact on Tuesday in our “Did You Know?” feature on our Facebook page.
TCJ realized the bicentennial while searching for facts about the area for “Did You Know?”
The Jasper & Walker County, Alabama Photos Facebook page posted so much more information than the Journal knew about on Tuesday about the 200 years, including much about how Walker County celebrated its centennial. Gary Hodges manages the page and put a lot of work into researching the bicentennial. He told TCJ Co-Founder James Phillips on Tuesday, “I just wanted to bring this important moment to others.” Hodges accomplished that with some incredible information.
Phillips, acting as a native of Walker County and a resident of Jasper, contacted a couple of members of the Walker County Commission to see if any plans were being made to celebrate the bicentennial,” which there were not.
“I think we need to really play this up and come up with a big event and maybe some smaller events during the year. I would be happy to lead a committee or be on a committee, but I think it needs to be something that is headed up by the County,” Phillips said in the text.
The Community Journal hopes a committee can be put together with events planned in each city or town in Walker County with a big event planned for Jasper around the actual date the county was founded, which was Dec. 26, 1823.
Phillips plans to speak during the public comment portion of the next meeting of the Walker County Commission to hopefully get the ball rolling on building a committee.
The Community Journal has built a logo to mark the occasion and wants to see some big events planned for this once in a lifetime event.
The bicentennial allows us to reflect on 200 years of Walker County history, learning and celebrating where we are now and into the future.
