Reed back as senate president pro tem; names committee assignments

Montgomery — Sen. Greg Reed (R-Jasper) has been re-elected to serve as Senate President Pro Tempore.

The Alabama State Senate on Tuesday opened its Organizational Session of the 2023–2026 legislative quadrennium. The first item of business was electing the Senate President Pro Tempore.

The nominations were opened by the longest-serving member of the Senate, Senator Jabo Waggoner and followed with comments, praises, and applauses from Senate members of both parties. With the motion made by Senator Waggoner and seconded by Senator Bobby Singleton, the nominations were closed, and a roll call vote was recorded. All 35 members of the Senate were present, and the vote was 35-0 to re-elect Sen. Greg Reed.

“It’s been a great honor of my life to be a member of the Alabama Senate and to be elected as the president pro tem is a great privilege,” said Reed, who was first elected to the Senate in 2010. “I think we’ve accomplished good things in the tenure that I’ve been in this role in the last couple of years. We’ve got much more to move forward to focus on as the members are all working on topics that are important to them.”

Reed gave remarks of thanks and gratitude to his colleagues, Senate staff, his district, his family, and his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

“As we reflect on the success of these past few sessions, I am prepared to build on that momentum and forge new paths in the 2023 session that will continue to have a positive impact across the state of Alabama,” Reed said. “I am honored to serve our state and my fellow senators as Senate President Pro Tempore as we work together to make Alabama the best place to live, work, and raise a family. This re-election as Senate President Pro Tempore is a great honor. The greatest honor is the confidence that my Senate colleagues have in me.”

On Wednesday, Reed announced Senate Standing Committee Assignments during the second day of the 2023 – 2026 Organizational Session.
