Alayna Hattaway, a junior volleyball player at Jasper High School, has been named The Community Journal’s Student Athlete of the Week.
Hattaway, who started playing volleyball at 7-years-old for Jasper Park and Rec, is a 6-foot 16-year-old outside hitter for the Vikings. She has 905 career kills. She also excels in the classroom with a 3.9 GPA.
“I have been on varsity my entire high school career,” Hattaway said. “It has been challenging as a younger kid playing with older girls, but I wouldn’t want it any other way. I’m very grateful to be a part of one of the best volleyball programs in Alabama.”
Hattaway’s future plans are to play at the collegiate level and graduate with a bachelors degree in nursing then work in labor and delivery somewhere close to home.
Hattaway attributed much of her success to her teammates and coaches.
“I would not consider my teammates as my friends, because they are my family. I have played with most of my teammates since we were little. I couldn’t ask for a better group of girls to play the sport I love with,” she said. “I wouldn’t be the player I am without my teammates’ and coaches’ support and hard work.”
