Culvert collapses in Union Chapel

A culvert on Buttermilk Road in the Union Chapel community collapsed on Wednesday, forcing half the road to be closed until it can be repaired next week.

District 3 Commissioner Jim Borden said he expects his crew will be able to make the repairs on Monday “if all things go as planned.” He said it would definitely be repaired next week.

Barricades were put up Wednesday, and Borden said rainy weather will have to clear and line locating be done before the repairs can be done.

“We have to call 8-1–1 just like a resident does before we do any digging,” he said.

The collapsed section of the road is about four feet in diameter, but it could become larger. Borden urged drivers to “be careful” on the roadway.

The culvert collapse is near Sleepy Holler Campground about 1 mile from the 4-way stop in Union Chapel. Borden said he estimates the repair will take approximately four hours, and the road will be closed during that time.

“We will inform 9-1-1 when we begin, and we will also put that information on the Walker County Commission Facebook page,” he said.
