A storm shelter was installed Monday in the Curry community.
The storm shelter is located on land near the Curry Volunteer Fire and Rescue station. Sen. Greg Reed (R-Jasper) secured the funding in 2021 from the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA) for courthouse security and a storm shelter. The Walker County Commission, that same year, approved the funding for the Curry shelter.
“I appreciate all the hard work by everyone involved with this project. I also appreciate the Curry Fire Department and their willingness to serve the Curry community,” District 1 Commissioner Keith David said on Monday.
Walker County EMA Coordinator Regina Myers and Glenn Peak, assistant engineer for Walker County, are overseeing the project.
“While we are grateful to see the Curry Shelter being set today, we still have to complete the construction phase before it can be made available to the public,” Myers said. “Safety shelter will be onsite tomorrow to work on anchoring the shelter and installing more seating. The restroom has to be finished, along with all utilities installed, and then, we must have fire marshal clear it for occupancy.”
Once complete, the shelter will be operated by Curry Fire and Rescue.
