Striping on three area roads approved by Walker County Commission

A few roads in the county will be getting new striping after approval Tuesday by the Walker County Commission.

The roads approved for striping were Tutwiler Road, Goodsprings Road and Prospect Road.

County Engineer Mike Short said bids were received on Feb. 15 with only one bidder, which was Ozark Striping. Short said the bid for Tutwiler and Goodsprings roads came in a neatly $49,000, while the Prospect Road bid was nearly $87,000.

“These striping jobs we got may be completed in the next month,” District 2 Commissioner Jeff Burrough said. “Prospect Road is very needed, and that will enhance that road.”

District 3 Commissioner Jim Borden said the paving is desperately needed in several areas of his district, saying it’s dangerous at night and in the rain.

“Striping the Tutwiler and Goodsprings roads is something we’ve talked about since the fall, and I’m glad we got that bid in,” Borden said. “You don’t realize until you get off into the country that many of these roads haven’t been striped in 20 years, and some of them haven’t been striped since they were asphalted the first time.”

In other talk about roads at Tuesday’s meeting, David Ross, owner of Ross and Sons Paint and Body in Dora, spoke during the public comment time about the condition of Horseshoe Bend in the Quinton area.

“I’m hear to request assistance. The road at Horseshoe Bend is in such bad shape that we are having to pull each other out when it rains,” Ross said. “Even a large truck was stuck last week. They are refusing to pick up any garbage now. We just need some assistance in our neighborhood on that road.”

Commissioners do not comment during the public comment section of the meeting, but often times will bring up requests at future meetings.

Short also updated the commission members on the two area bridge projects. Brown’s Bridge is approximately 50 percent complete. Smith’s Chapel Bridge should be started in a couple of months, he added.
