Jasper High School announced Tuesday that David Reeves is the Vikings’ new head football coach. Reeves spent the last seven years as the defensive coordinator at UAB, where he has been on the staff since 2014. Reeves was a Broyles Award nominee in both 2018 and 2019. He was a semifinalist for the award in 2019. The award goes to the top assistant coach in college football.
“As a former high school coach in Alabama, Jasper is a place that I’ve always thought ‘man, that could be a really, really special place,” Reeves said. “Winning is important to me. It’s right after taking care of young people. My philosophy is that once to take care of a young person, the whole football part comes easy. I don’t like to lose.”
Jonathan Jordan, assistant principal and athletic director at JHS, said he already had a relationship with Reeves and was highly impressed by him during the interview process.
“During the interview, I was asking coach about 5A, 6A, Ramsey, Clay-Chalkville and Pinson Valley, and then I started thinking this guy has prepared defenses to play against Georgia, Tennessee, LSU, Texas A&M and Florida. That made me think he’s probably not worried about these high school teams.”
Reeves said he also has a strong relationship with Jasper wide receivers’ coach Tyrone Prothro. Reeves was a graduate assistant at the University of Alabama while Prothro played there.
Reeves has previous college coaching stops at Southern Arkansas, UT-Martin and Jacksonville State.
As a high school coach, Reeves has coached in Georgia, Tennessee and Alabama.
“I was born in Huntsville. I’m a north Alabama guy,” he said. “I know how important high school football is in this area. I’m excited to take this next step and lead the Jasper Vikings’ football program.”
Reeves and his wife Starr have two sons, Major and Rhett.
Reeves takes over a Jasper team which finished 2022 with a 5-6 record.
