DORA — The Dora City Council approved an ordinance Thursday that will annex an 11-acre piece of property into the city, pushing the city limit closer to Interstate 22.
The “L-shaped” piece of property is owned by Northport-based Alawest-AL, LLC and is adjacent to property owned by Drummond Company being used for the Heritage Landing development along I-22. Mayor Randy Stephens said he expects that land to eventually be annexed into the city as well.
“This basically get us to I-22, which is something that myself and the city council have been working on for a long time,” Stephens said after Thursday’s meeting.
Stephen’s said the shape of the Alawest property will also make annexing other areas, including Yerkwood, easier for the city and landowners who want to be annexed.
“This property runs along a good stretch that will allow some people to be annexed easier, even if other property owners do not want to be annexed into the city,” he said. “We would like as many people as possible to annex in the area, and we think this annexation approved tonight will help in that.”
In other action from the meeting, the council:
• Approved engineering costs for the Dora Lake renovation project.
• Agreed to purchase new lids for garbage cans at Dora Park.
