CORDOVA — As a part of its “Deep Clean” efforts for the month of April, Cordova officials are holding a community clean up day on Saturday (April 15).
“This is a great opportunity to get out and really be part of your community and make a difference,” Mayor Jeremy Pate said. “Whether you are helping out in our downtown area, one of our neighborhoods or local parks, it is just a great way to welcome spring and feel good about our city.”
The day will begin at 8 a.m. at the Pavilion with free donuts and coffee, and wrap up around noon.
The “Deep Clean” in the city will continue through April. If residents have any debris, garbage, junk or clutter and can move it to the side of the road, call the city at 205-483-9266 and it will haul it away. This is only for the month of April.
“The goal of this project is to remove all unsightly debris, garbage, junk, clutter, etc., from residential property and move it to the curbside for the City employees to pick up,” Pate wrote in a letter to citizens in late March. “Waste from commercial sites, construction sites and any waste generated from a location other than a resident in the Cordova city limits are NOT eligible for pickup.”
In the letter, Pate said several items will not be accepted due to safety reasons, including “industrial waste, hazardous waste, toxic materials, biohazardous or infectious wastes, chemical solvents and cleaners, propane tanks, fuels, oils, oxygen tanks, antifreeze, partially-filled aerosol cans, ammunition, fertilizer, other flammable materials, paints, car batteries, florescent bulbs, hot water tanks, tires and materials containing lead or asbestos.”
Pate said during the Cordova City Council meeting on Tuesday that many residents have already contacted the city and taken part in the initiative.
“We want everyone who will to be a part of this,” he said. “If you need help getting it to the road, call us. We have people standing by who want to help.”
Pate said another “Deep Clean” will take place in the fall.
