The Jasper City Council approved several event permits during its meeting Tuesday, including two for a local recovery organization.
Recovery Organization of Support Specialists requested permits for Thursday, Aug. 31 and Saturday, Sept. 30 for events to be held on the courthouse square.
The August event will be a Walker County Overdose Awareness Walk. Kellie Barnes, event coordinator for the City of Jasper, told council members the event would take place from 6 to 8 p.m. that day with the walk taking place along sidewalks downtown. She said there would be resource tables, two speakers and one musician at the walk.
The September event is Recovery Rock, also sponsored by ROSS, which will take place from 7 to 10 p.m., featuring live music. Resource tables will again be setup.
The other event permits approved on Tuesday included A Taste on Main by Jasper Main Street on Friday, June 16 and Jasper High School Cross Country Summer 5k Series on Mondays, June 5, June 13, June 19 and June 26.
In other business from the meeting, the council:
- Approved overnight travel for police personnel to attend the Chiefs Conference July 30 – August 3, 2023, in Orange Beach and the ANOA Conference August 21 – 24, 2023, in Orange Beach.
- Introduced Budget Amendment #2022/2023-15 to provide funding for the summer reading program at Carl Elliott Regional/Jasper Public Library.
- Authorize Mayor David O’Mary to sign the FY2024 Nutrition Agreement with Middle Alabama Area Agency on Aging.
- Approved Nuisance Abatement of several unsafe structures and grass/weeds.
- Introduced an Ordinance annexing a parcel of land located at 3704 Florida Avenue in District 5.
