Two Oakman Middle students arrested after handgun reported at school

Two students were arrested at Oakman Middle School on Monday.

The principal was alerted to a student in possession of a handgun.

A Walker County Sheriff’s Office School Resource Officer, Deputy Greg Warren, was working on school property when he was notified by the school administration about a juvenile in possession of a firearm.

Warren and the principal were able to locate the firearm and those suspected of being in possession of the firearm. The schools video surveillance system was utilized to assist in the investigation.

Walker County Schools Superintendent said the gun was in a student’s backpack.

“Within a few minutes of being notified, the principal and SRO confiscated the backpack and handled the situation appropriately,” Willingham said in a statement on the WCS Facebook page. “Because proper protocol was followed, a terrible situation was turned into a best case scenario for everyone. I want to commend the Oakman administrators and sheriff’s department for ensuring that everyone was safe.”

The students are not named due to their age and we have no evidence of any threats to the school at this time.

“We appreciate the great working relationship between our school officials and School Resource Officers,” Sheriff Nick Smith said.
