Oscar-winning actor Matthew McConaughey has been spotted all over the Birmingham area in the last month and may soon be in Walker County to shoot scenes for his upcoming film, “The Rivals of Amziah King,” a crime thriller.
Employees at The Frosty Mug, located in Walker County next to the Warrior River, confirmed on Tuesday that construction around the iconic area business is in fact a set being built for the film. Workers said they had not been given a timetable for when the actual filming would take place, but set workers were on the scene Tuesday afternoon.
Although specific plot details are being kept under wraps, Deadline reported in early May that the film is described as a deeply atmospheric, character-focused crime thriller set against the unique backdrop of remote Oklahoma. McConaughey will play the titular role of Amziah King.
McConaughey won an Academy Award for the 2013 biopic “Dallas Buyers Club” and received an Emmy nomination for HBO’s “True Detective.” He previously starred in Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi epic “Interstellar” and Guy Ritchie’s 2019 action-comedy “The Gentleman.” He is also known for his character in the cult classic “Dazed & Confused.”
This is not the first time The Frosty Mug will get its own taste of fame. The restaurant was featured on AMC’s “The Ride with Norman Reedus” during the Season 4 premiere that starred Jasper native Michael Rooker.
