Walker County inmate saved after possible overdose

An inmate at the Walker County Jail was found unresponsive early Friday morning, but was saved after being given three doses of Narcan.

A Walker County Jail corrections officer, on rounds getting inmates ready for court, entered a cell Friday morning to find an inmate unresponsive. The inmate had just been booked into the jail from another agency a short time prior.

After attempting to wake the inmate, the officer and shift supervisor alerted other staff of a medical emergency. Due to the nature of the inmate’s charges and past encounters, it was believed the inmate possibly overdosed from ingesting drugs during his encounter with law enforcement before being booking into the jail.

The shift supervisor immediately administered 4mg of Naloxone (Narcan), and 9-1-1 was called. The jail captain arrived on the scene and administered two additional 4mg doses of Narcan to the inmate.

The Jasper Fire and Rescue Department arrived at the Walker County Jail and began treating the inmate. The inmate began regaining consciousness, and started answering questions that were being asked of him.

The inmate was transported to a local hospital via Regional Paramedical Services for further medical treatment.

“If not for the quick thinking and timely actions of our officers this morning, the outcome of this situation could have not had the positive ending,” Sheriff Nick Smith said. “These officers relied on their Narcan and training without hesitation, and a man’s life being saved was the result.”
