Deputy Carson Legg and Deputy Tim Thacker responded to an unresponsive female last week at a gas station on Highway 5.
Deputies checked her pulse and breathing while they received information from another individual that the female may have overdosed on Fentanyl.
Legg administered Narcan to the subject and she became responsive after some time.
Regional Paramedical Services arrived on scene to take over care of the patient.
“We are proud of the deputies that took decisive action to care for the patient until paramedics could arrive on scene to provide advanced care,” Sheriff Nick Smith. “Firemen, paramedics, and law enforcement officers are saving lives daily with whoever is first on scene being able to administer Narcan to reverse opioid overdoses.”
Sheriff Nick Smith recognized the two deputies on Tuesday afternoon for their recent lifesaving efforts with Narcan.
“Their quick thinking and application of Narcan was able to reverse the effects of the drugs and help that individual recover. Thank you, Thacker and Legg.”
Smith said first responders have seen a variety of responses from patients with the use of Narcan.
“When reversing an opioid, overdose patients can become combative, disoriented, or confused,” he said. “There are also times where the patient is defiant, denies using drugs, and may seem agitated at the first responders for essentially saving their life.
“With more Narcan becoming available to everyone, it is important to be prepared for a variety of responses from the patients when Narcan is administered,” Smith added.
