WCSO holds Youth Leadership Academy

The Walker County Sheriff’s Office held its first Youth Leadership Academy on Saturday.

A group of 18 students, ages 14-19, most of whom are part of the WCSO Explorers post, had a full day of events and learning.

“It was impressive to see the students participate in the same physical agility test administered to our deputies,” Sheriff Nick Smith said. “So many teens in today’s world are stuck staring at a video screen, but not these kids, at least not today.

Taking a tour of the jail, meeting with Circuit Court Judge Greg Williams, and checking out the WCSO helicopter were some of the events the youth participated in.

“We appreciate Coroner Joey Vick, Judge Greg Williams, Tabatha Smith, Carl Carpenter, Johnny Sudberry, Wayne Jones, and everyone who helped make today possible,” Smith said. “We are also grateful for the anonymous donor who provided the food and refreshments for today. This was tons of fun, and we are looking forward to the next class.”
