Alabama’s 18th annual back-to-school sales tax holiday begins Friday, July 21, and runs through Sunday, July 23. During this time, shoppers can purchase certain school-related items without paying state sales tax.
The following items are eligible for the sales tax holiday:
- School supplies, each under $50
- Computers, printers or printer supplies, each under $750
- Individual clothing items under $100
- Paints, paint brushes, sketchbooks and clay under $50
- Books under $30
The sales tax holiday is a popular way for families to save money on back-to-school supplies. In 2022, the holiday saved shoppers an estimated $12 million.
“The back-to-school sales tax holiday is a great way for families to save money on school supplies,” said Alabama Retail Association President Rick Brown. “We encourage shoppers to take advantage of this opportunity and plan their back-to-school shopping accordingly.”
In Walker County, municipalities who participate in the sales tax holiday include Jasper, Sumiton, Dora, Nauvoo, and Eldridge. Tips for Saving Money During the Sales Tax Holiday
- Plan your shopping ahead of time and make a list of the items you need.
- Shop at stores that participate in the sales tax holiday.
- Compare prices before you buy.
- Bring cash or a debit card to avoid paying credit card fees.
