PARRISH — A 9-month-old reported kidnapped from a Parrish residence on Monday evening was found safe Tuesday morning inside her father’s SUV across the street from where she was reported kidnapped, down a steep ravine covered in thick kudzu.
Parrish Police Chief Danny Woodard said in a press conference just after noon on Tuesday that Harlow Darby Freeman was found around 8:30 a.m. by law enforcement searching the area. He said it was the fourth time the area had been searched.
“It was searched several times overnight, and it was impossible to see,” Woodard said. “Once we got into the daylight hours, with the help of the ALEA aviation division, law enforcement officials were able to see what looked like a vehicle deep in the ravine. Considering all things, this was the best possible outcome, finding the child safe and well.”
Woodard said the child had been reported kidnapped and several witnesses said they observed the vehicle leaving at a high rate of speed. He also said once the car was located that it looked like it had gone into the ravine in reverse.
Woodard did not comment on exactly what law enforcement officials thought happened, saying the incident was still under investigation. He did not rule out the vehicle being stolen or if the vehicle had simply rolled in reverse.
“Anything is possible. It is an ongoing investigation,” Woodard said.
Woodard did confirm it was the child’s father who reported her kidnapped. He also confirmed that several people of interest had been questioned.
Local, state and federal law enforcement were involved in the search and investigation. Woodard expressed gratitude for all the help.
“This was a great example of law enforcement agencies working together for a positive outcome. We appreciate all the help,” he said.
Parrish Mayor Bubba Cagle said volunteers from throughout the area came to help search throughout the night, brought food for those searching and was supportive in any way needed.
“We had people from all over the state who helped in this situation, and I’m glad it turned out the way it did,” he said. “Seeing the family when they found out she was ok, especially seeing her big brother’s reaction, is something I will never forget.”
