Inmate workers in the kitchen of the Walker County Jail on Friday used fresh vegetables grown in the inmate garden as a part of that day’s lunch.
In 2019, Sheriff Nick Smith started a pilot program for an inmate garden.
Desperation Church helped the Walker County Sheriff’s Office build raised bed gardens at the facility. They prayed over the gardens, and they have been producing for the last few years.
The program has been successful enough that next spring, the sheriff’s office will expand it as a way to help feed the inmates inside the jail, with some of the things they grow in the garden.
