Powell steps down at SCS; Moon named interim football coach

By James Phillips, The Community Journal

In a sudden move only 20 days before the start of its football season, Sumiton Christian School has had a change at head coach.

David Powell has stepped down from his post after four seasons at the school. The member of the Alabama High School Athletic Association hall of fame and former longtime McAdory head coach had a 19-23 record for the Eagles and led them to the playoffs twice. Jeremy Moon, an assistant already on the staff, was named interim head coach.

Sumiton Christian has a bye week the first week of the season and will play its first game on Sept. 1, hosting Hubbertville.

Moon, a 1995 graduate of Dora High School, is a U.S. Coast Guard veteran and has served as an assistant coach a several schools. Moon said he’s excited to take on the challenge of being the Eagles’ head coach.

“Anytime you can achieve something you’ve spent many years working toward, it is a great feeling, and I thank the SCS president, board, and administration for the opportunity. Also, I really appreciate the steadfast support of our players, their parents, our Quarterback Club, our students, and the SCS family,” Moon said. “I would be remiss if I didn’t also thank Coach Powell for investing his time and his knowledge into our program and for mentoring me over the last four years. I’ve been very blessed to work with a hall of fame group of coaches over the years.”

With the season close to starting, Moon said the team has handled the change well.

“I could not ask for a better group of Christian young men,” he said. “They have been positive throughout this transition and we’ve had very productive practices. They are an extremely intelligent, tough group of young men and they will give their all to meet this challenge.”

The support of the community is also important, Moon said.

“Our entire SCS community has always been extremely supportive, so I know that will continue as we start this new chapter. There have already been some facility improvements and encouraging steps made in just the last few days.”

Moon did not disclose Powell’s reason for leaving or next step but did wish home well.

“Coach Powell is a hall of famer and he has earned the right to do whatever he feels is best,” Moon said. “I know he didn’t take this lightly and he had to make a difficult decision that was best for himself and his family, and I wish him nothing but the best.”
