Walker County Courthouse closed due to flooding from burst pipes

By James Phillips, The Community Journal

The main section of the Walker County Courthouse was closed Monday due to damage from water pipes bursting and flooding the facility over the weekend.

Walker County Commission Chairman Steve Miller said during the commission meeting on Monday morning that there is damage on all floors.

“We are closed in the courthouse part due to an emergency, because our stairwells not being safe for people to go up and down the stairs and elevators not being able to go up and down,” Miller said.

The county’s maintenance department is currently working to clear the flooding with help from inmates from the Walker County Sheriff’s Office.

“I want to thank the sheriff for that help,” Miller said. “We wouldn’t be able to get it done without that help.”

There was no timetable given for when the courthouse will reopen. The flooding did not affect the back annex building where the commission meeting chambers are located.
