WCSO upgrades corrections body cameras with technology grant

By James Phillips, The Community Journal

The Walker County Sheriff’s Office Corrections Division, thanks to a technology grant, recently upgraded to top of the line Axon body cameras.

The body cameras purchased for the corrections department have HD quality video and dual audio channels. It can record HD in low light with the audio channels making voices more distinct with automatic tuning. The body cameras are also extremely durable and has an up to 12-hour battery life.

“The Taser Axon body camera price is slightly higher than some of the body cams models on the market, but the technology and durability make it worth the price,” Sheriff Nick Smith said.

Smith added that he hopes to upgrade body cameras for patrol deputies as well, but the sheriff’s office will have to find the funding.

“The current Transcend ones we bought almost five years ago,” Smith said. “The Axon is the camera we would have gone to years ago, but the funding wasn’t there to immediately go purchase them .The Axon cameras are $700 a unit versus the Transcend that were $199 a unit.”
