Suicide Awareness Walk set for Saturday in downtown Jasper

By James Phillips, The Community Journal

The second Teen Suicide Awareness Walk is set for Saturday in downtown Jasper. The event, organized by Cordova native Olyvia Mooney, aims to raise awareness for the growing problem of teenage suicide across the United States.

Mooney, a suicide survivor herself, has been a vocal advocate for mental health and suicide prevention.

Three years ago, Mooney attempted to take her own life by overdosing on medication. However, she was unsuccessful in her attempt.

“At the time, I thought that’s what I wanted,” she said. “Struggling with my mental health issues for years was finally really getting to me and I couldn’t handle it anymore, but I survived because I’m supposed to be here.”

Diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder, CPTSD, Bipolar 2, and ADHD at the age of 15, Mooney has faced numerous challenges in her mental health journey. Despite these difficulties, she refuses to let them define her and has become a powerful young woman with a lot to live for.

In July of 2021, Mooney walked over 40 miles for Teen Suicide Awareness and Prevention. Her goal was not only to show others that they are not alone but also to prove to herself that she still had the strength and resilience to make a difference.

This year, she has decided to organize a Walk/Run 5K for Awareness and a 1 Mile Walk in memory of those who have lost their lives to suicide.

The event will begin and end at Lavish Coffee Bar in downtown Jasper. The 5K Walk/Run will begin Saturday  at 2:30 p.m., with the one-mile walk at 5 p.m. Registration for both events starts at noon. Mooney is asking participants in the 5K Walk/Run for a $25 donation that will include a T-shirt. The one-mile walk is free to participate. Mooney said there will be guest speakers and other activities for the two-plus hours between registration beginning and the start of the 5K

“We are so very thankful for the continued support of everyone, and I just know we will have such an amazing turnout this year,” she said.

The event will offer a variety of resources, guest speakers, refreshments, food, shirts, bracelets, keychains, and more.

Additionally, there will be a Memory Banner where participants can honor their loved ones or anyone they knew who lost their battle with suicide.

“I would like to thank everyone for all the donations and support that you’ve already given, and I’m so grateful already for everyone that will be participating in our walk this year,” she said. “You all have no idea the amount of love I have for anyone that takes a step forward for mental health and suicide awareness and prevention.“

Mooney’s hope is that this event can become an annual tradition, continuing to touch and save lives.
