Jasper events celebrate pets, support animal welfare groups

By James Phillips, The Community Journal

Walker County is gearing up for two exciting events on Saturday (Oct. 21) that promise a day of fun-filled activities for pets and their owners. The 21st annual Pets on Parade and Pooch Plunge are set to bring together animal enthusiasts from all walks of life.

Kicking off the day’s festivities is the highly anticipated Pets on Parade event, taking place at Gamble Park. Pet registration will begin promptly at 9 a.m., followed by the main event from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. This inclusive gathering welcomes pets of all shapes and sizes, from dogs and cats to hamsters, birds, rabbits, horses, and even pigs. Participants can enter their beloved companions into various categories, including Cutest, Best Costume, Most Unusual, Owner Lookalike, Best Wiggle Butt, Best Kisses and Best in Talking.

Linda Lewis, President of The Chamber of Commerce of Walker County, expressed her enthusiasm for the event, stating, “This is a project led by the Chamber’s Junior Ambassadors and will raise funds for the Walker County Humane Society’s spay and neuter program. It is always a fun event, and we appreciate the community’s support of it for more than 20 years now.”

To participate in Pets on Parade, there is a nominal $5 entry fee per pet. Each category will have first, second, third and honorable mention prizes. For more information, contact the Chamber at (205) 384-4571.

Following the morning’s festivities, pet owners and their furry friends are encouraged to make their way to the Memorial Park Natatorium for the Pooch Plunge, scheduled from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. This event, which requires a $5 fee per dog, aims to support R.U.F.F. (Rescuers United for Furbabies), an organization dedicated to rescuing and caring for animals in need. Attendees can look forward to a range of activities, including supervised swimming sessions exclusively for pups, Paw Art with Sarah O’Mary Roberts, on-site puppy adoptions, delectable dog treats and pup cups, hot dogs and barbecue for humans, and each pup will get a goodie bag and bandana.

Bandanas will be given to all dogs participating in the Pooch Plunge at the Natatorium in Jasper. (RUFF Facebook Page)
