A devastating wildfire tore through the Argo community on Saturday, scorching approximately 40 acres of land.
While the exact number of structures affected remains uncertain, officials have confirmed that at least two were engulfed in flames. No homes were reported as damaged.
The wildfire prompted an immediate and coordinated response from multiple fire departments, including Argo Fire, Sipsey Fire, Dora Fire, Sumiton Fire, Yerkwood Fire, Empire Fire, Cordova Fire, Boldo Fire, Pineywoods Fire, McCollum Fire, as well as assistance from the Alabama Forestry Commission. In addition, the Walker County Emergency Management Agency (EMA), Walker County Sheriff’s Office and the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) mobilized to combat the blaze and ensure the safety of residents.
Regina Myers, the EMA Director for Walker County, expressed her gratitude for the efforts of the responders.
“We had an incredible show of support from our local heroes,” she said. “These brave men and women from various fire departments, along with the EMA, Sheriff’s Office, and ALEA, worked tirelessly to contain the wildfire and protect our community.”
The severity of the situation prompted the American Red Cross to deliver food and water to ensure that the firefighters and other personnel remained hydrated and energized throughout the battle with the blaze, which lasted several hours. The call first came in around 3:30 p.m. and the fire was contained by approximately 7 p.m.
