Parrish urging residents to pay new garbage can deposit

By James Phillips, The Community Journal

PARRISH – Mayor Bubba Cagle is calling on citizens to promptly pay the $46 deposit for their new garbage cans to avoid any disruption in their garbage collection services. The deadline for payment is set for November 1.

Cagle emphasized that according to the town’s ordinance, residents are required to have garbage service if they live within the town limits.

The town posted a reminder about the deposits to residents on its Facebook page.  Cagle provided further clarification to The Community Journal on the need for the deposit. He explained that Republic, the previous garbage collection contractor, had taken back their old cans, necessitating the acquisition of new ones.

While some residents may have paid a deposit in the past, many were not charged during the Republic era. Cagle assured residents that if they could provide proof of a previous deposit payment, the town would honor it. However, he admitted that he himself could not recall paying a deposit and would be required to pay one as well.

“I don’t think I ever paid one, so I’ve got to pay it just like everyone else,” he said.
Cagle highlighted the benefits of the new garbage cans, noting they are higher quality and should help reduce instances of animals rummaging through trash. Additionally, the new cans will aid in identifying residents who are paying for garbage services versus those who are not.

While some residents have expressed frustration with the process, Cagle emphasized that the $46 deposit is a reasonable fee considering the cost of the cans. He stated, “Some people are upset about it, but I think $46 is really cheap for a deposit for a can that costs more than that. They also need to remember that it is a deposit. If they move out of Parrish, all they have to do is return their can and that money will be paid back to them.”

Cagle confirmed failure to pay the deposit by Nov. 1 will result in the suspension of garbage collection services for the customer.
