Jasper Main Street shares its success at Flourish Celebration

By James Phillips, The Community Journal

Jasper Main Street recently marked its eighth year as a Main Street Designated City with its annual Flourish Celebration, held on Thursday, Nov. 16 at the former First Christian Church in Downtown Jasper.

Josh Gates, president of the Jasper Main Street board of directors, broke down much of the success JMS has had in its short time as an active group.

Jasper Main Street has been instrumental in 58 new, expanded and/or relocated businesses to downtown Jasper. Those have produced 320 new jobs as well as $10.51 million in building rehabilitation and new construction and $4.64 million in public and private improvements to the downtown area. The work of Jasper Main Street had also been directly involved in $13.3 million in total real estate sales in downtown Jasper.

“These accomplishments are due to the unwavering support of generous community members,” Gates said.

Volunteers play a large role for Jasper Main Street. Over its eight years, volunteers have given 7,352 hours of service, which translates to $129,027, minutes to the program. Iris Sanders Jarvis, of Young Jewelers, was named the 2023 Jasper Main Street Volunteer of the Year, largely for her role in bringing Trolley on Main (TOM) to downtown Jasper.

“We are creating a unique experience and providing an atmosphere to elevate Jasper,” she said about TOM. “We are evolving and flourishing. We are ready for 2024. Thank you for this recognition.”

Jasper Mayor David O’Mary spoke about the progress and positive impact that Jasper Main Street has brought to the city. He acknowledged the challenges faced by many municipalities and praised Main Street for its ability to overcome them and create a vibrant downtown.

Kevin Callahan, owner of Honda/Hyundai of Jasper and chairman of the board for the Walker Area Community Foundation, commended Jasper Main Street for its efforts in improving the economic vitality of the area and attracting investments.

Mary Wirth, president of Main Street Alabama, expressed her admiration for the work done by Jasper Main Street. She praised the group for its dedication and innovative approach to revitalizing the downtown area. She mentioned the $1 billion economic impact that Main Street had achieved across the state and credited Jasper Main Street as a significant contributor to that success.

The meeting concluded with a heartfelt tribute to Patricia Putman, a beloved member of the community who passed away earlier this year. Her husband, Jasper Main Street director Mike Putman, expressed his gratitude for her love and support for Jasper Main Street and her belief in its mission.
