Jasper High hires new volleyball coach

The Jasper City School System announced Wednesday that Kellye Bowen has been hired as the head volleyball coach at Jasper High School.

“When we began this process, our goal was to provide our student athletes with the very best volleyball coach and person in the state of Alabama to lead them. We believe we have exceeded our expectations with the hiring of Coach Bowen,” JHS athletic director Jonathan Jordan said. “We have a strong history of volleyball success in Jasper, and look to build on that past while being fully focused on the future of Viking volleyball.”

Jordan said Bowen checked all the boxes if what they were looking for in a coach, including being a high school all-state player in three sports, an SEC volleyball player and head coaching experience at the highest level of high school athletics in our state.

“Her pedigree is exactly what we were seeking,” he said.

Bowen is a graduate of Curry High School, where she played volleyball, softball and basketball. She played collegiately at Mississippi State.

Bowen joins the Viking staff following a stellar tenure at Spain Park High School, where she built the Jaguars into a perennial power in AHSAA Class 7A. During her time at Spain Park, her teams were constantly in the championship mix, claiming four Area Championships, competing in five Super Regionals, three Elite Eights, two Final Fours, earning one State Runner-Up plaque, and claiming the 2021 State Championship- finishing that campaign ranked No. 5 nationally.

Along with her coaching and teaching duties, Bowen will use her vast experience in athletic administration by serving as an assistant athletic director.

“We are beyond excited to have Coach Bowen join Viking Nation and look forward to the positive impact that she will have on our students and in our community,” Jordan said.
